How to Maintain All Weather Sunbrella Cushions
Sunbrella® is a stylish, weather-resistant fabric with a coating that repels water, dirt, stains, and liquids. The Sunbrella® fabric withstands the elements and remains durable and colorfast for years thanks to its solution-dyed acrylic fibers. The breathable fabric is typically paired with (double) layers of quick-dry foam, a comfortable foam with an open-cell structure that doesn't retain water and dries quickly. All cushions come with zippers and are machine washable.
Sunbrella® fabrics are highly maintenance-friendly. The cushion covers can be removed with zippers and washed in the washing machine. Tip: Wet the covers before putting them back on for easier fitting. After maintenance or washing, it's recommended to iron the fabric at a low temperature to reactivate the waterproof coating. Be sure not to use a steam iron or iron with a steam function as this may damage the fabric.
For light dirt or stains:
Immediately wipe away dirt or stains with a soft brush or cloth.
If a stain persists, follow these steps:
Step 1:
Mix 60 ml of mild soap with 4 liters of lukewarm water (less than 40°C).
Step 2:
Clean the stain with a soft brush and let the solution soak in.
Step 3:
Thoroughly rinse the fabric with clean water and allow it to air dry.
For stubborn stains or mildew:
Sunbrella® fabric is specially treated to resist mildew. In exceptional circumstances, mold may develop on dirt that remains on the fabric. In that case, remove stains as follows:
Step 1:
Mix 240 ml of bleach and 60 ml of mild soap with 4 liters of clean water.
Step 2:
Spray the solution onto the fabric and let it sit for a while.
Step 3:
Scrub thoroughly with a soft brush.
Step 4:
Thoroughly rinse the fabric with clean water and allow it to air dry.
If the problem persists, add extra bleach to the water to remove stubborn stains or mildew.
Protection Tip:
During the winter months, bring your cushions indoors. While the cushions themselves will remain free from mold when left outside during winter, moisture trapped between the protective cover and the garden cushions may lead to mold formation.
If you don't have space to store the cushions indoors, we recommend using a waterproof cushion box or a custom-fitted protective cover for your garden furniture. When using a protective cover, adequate ventilation is crucial, especially in winter. Remove the cover on sunny days to prevent mold or mildew formation and take the opportunity to clean the cushions. Similarly, with a cushion box or bag, occasional ventilation is advisable.
